I'm not sure that aerodynamics is that effective at underground service speeds, but the loading gauge issue is significant to me.
To answer the question I would suggest that money is a key factor!

Interesting. Did you get a photo of the train cab?
The number is that from a 1959/62 stock car (can't remember which one).

I understand the key factor is reliability. Plug doors were considered for the S stock but the number of operations per hour, and the number of doors when compared with a NR train made the decision a no brainer!

The previous 1940 tube stock ran in 5 car formations at peak capacity so maybe a return to this working will be considered?

Quite agree. I think I know loads and then I get talking to one of the drivers and realise I have much to learn! That's why we're on here!

If anyone could photos of the work in progress that would be great. I wonder how much of the old cab can be reused?

I've finally been able to get some more work done on the layout. The poor weather has really held me back. I'm hoping to get this board completed by the end of the month. This board is a real challenge as it is curved. I have adopted a Barry Norman type approach and gone for the double beam method but used small 6mm blocks. The curve was created by starting at one end and gluing the internal blocks in a clamping shut before moving round to the next piece. Here it is still in the clamps but nearly dry. It feels solid! www.flickr.com/photos/25182511@N08/12703041215/

5703-5547-5707 still at Neasden but I imagine will go to Northwood today as soon as the last two cars leave today? I expected it to move to Northwood today Metman but it was still at Neasden this evening. Unit 5586 was, however, disposed of today. This train is going today.

There is a heavily tagged c stock at Northwood. All 6 cars still there.

Watford did have run round loops as there is a photo from 1959 showing a T stock train stabled on it.
Of course the run round round option my not have been possible if a train was stabled and the train was too long!
The A stock ending up beyond platform 2 at harrow was documented in an underground news.

Agreed. The describers at harrow are spot on. The screens ala Baker St would be ok but with that proposed increase in frequency may create problems.

I still see S7+1 trains on the Met so as Reg says they are likely to be around until the mods are done. Shame if you get one on a Amersham/Chesham service!

I was thinking that the crumbling 1972 trains on the Bakerloo should be replaced first, it would have been a more sensible solution then replacing sturdy newly-refurbished D-stock trains! I believe there are loading gauge issues South of Queens Park for the use of D stock on the Bakerloo! But in all seriousness a lot of people have asked the same question. The D stock is a victim of creating a generic train fleet. It's a shame because I like the D stock. It will be for the chop no doubt. It is probably a little too old to be used elsewhere, a little like the previous R stock some of which was only 24 yrs old when replaced and was nearly sold to Athens!

I actually agree with both above posts. In general the customer is getting a more suitable bit of kit for their journey. This doesn't stop some people expressing sadness for a train the type of which is fast disappearing.
Of course many would say there is no place for sentiment but let's just remember we are all enthusiasts here and if you can't have an opinion here where else can you have one?!
Personally I'm going to enjoy the DC motors, PCM and Westinghouse brakes for as long as is possible!

I will certainly go on a tour and attend the last run. It may be not be the best train built for LT but its got character and a history. I much prefer it to the soulless S stock that is replacing it even though in most cases it is a big improvement for users. I just don't like new trains personally!
