Combat trousers - now why didn't our lot think of that....
And quite appropriate when dealing with some of our 'customers' too!

They are secrets known only to the order of Baker Street. I couldn't possibly reveal those Greetings Citysig! Good to see you've found this little area, and I'm sorry if you're perturbed by the focus on the DR - but maybe it can act as a reminder of our existence from time to time! But - back to the general direction that this thread is taking......... A brief introduction to the 'concept' is probably appropriate though - there is a 'staff group' which floats about cyberspace which was started about two and a half years ago and of which a number of our contributors here are members and participants. The idea is that it's open to (in general) 'Operational Grades' only, and is quite often used to vent one's frustrations of the day to day workings of the railway and at those who often cause the problems. I think I'll leave it to youreselves to work out the minutiae further! But a 'social' aspect has developed out of this and quite a few of 'us' meet up from time to time for a 'convivial evening'. It was decided that there should be an award given to the person who made the greatest contribution to disrupting the railway and then took the inevitable ribbing from his or her peers in good part - I suspect you can see where this is going! Suffice it to say that I was runner up last year. The winner is also a member of this group, and I will leave it to him to reveal himself, should he feel so inclined. I received a certificate and - in the spirit of freedom of information - it can be viewed at photobucket.com/albums/v663/districtdave/Odds%20and%20Ends/?action=view¤t=Cert.jpgNo doubt I will hear further on this matter.........

;D
You'd better stop all this praise, or I'll be getting big headed!
Thanks again though for the words - but if it wasn't for some of the others who contribute here too - Solidbond, Met Apprentice, Tom, Q8 and anyone else I've forgotten, it wouldn't look as good as it does!
I'll shut up now - this is starting to sound like an Oscar's acceptance speech................................

Thanks for the kind comments guys - I really appreciate it!
I agree that the move to Proboards has been a good move, but the old Bravenet one proved the value of the idea, so it served its purpose!
As long as I keep getting 'hits' on the site it'll continue to grow (I hope!). But if it wasn't for you guys, and I think quite a few others, there'd be no point in it all, so thanks to you too!

Thanks for the responses one and all, though I'd (perhaps stupidly?) been hoping that we could have come up with a few ideas.
I certainly don't dispute what's been posted - I'm sure you're all spot on!
But - come on - get you tube maps out and see if you can put up some routes! I was hoping this could be a bit of fun!!!
If you want to keep them 'secret' I understand - PM me if you prefer, or I'll let you know the enquirers email address.

Right - you Underground Know-alls!
I've received the following email with a plea for help. Personally I haven't any idea of where to start on this, so I thought I'd throw it open to suggestions:
'Hi there,
my name is Roger Mason and I'm studying at the Academy of Music Ministry in Coventry (www.nexustrust.co.uk). The college is a charity which is financed largely by donations and sponsors. As a student I will be involved in the college's 'rag week' this May, and as part of a fund-raising effort I have decided to do a sponsored 'visit every London underground station'. I am aware of a world record, which I believe currently stands at 19hrs 18m 45s, and thought that if I were to do this I might as well have a go at breaking it! I have come unstuck though in which route would be most effective, and was wondering if you would be able to advise me as to which would be the fastest? Many thanks for your help in this matter,
Roger'
I've said I'll get back to the guy asap, so your early response would be welcome..........

just to quickly mention a couple of days ago i saw a man of about 50 hidding behind a vending machine on the westbound platform of dagenham east having a f*g this i found quite commical, the way in which he was acting was like he was playing some sort of game Not at all unusual, though most don't bother trying to pretend they're not smoking! Many will almost deliberately 'taunt' a driver as you come down the platform and many of the kids (usually the same bunch who throw bricks and other objects at the trains - see another thread on this!) just because they see it as another way of 'challenging authority'. There is to the 'genuine' element (usually visitors to the UK) who, because they're on an open section station, assume it's OK to smoke. You quite often find those at Acton Town or Earls Court and if you politely point them towards a 'No Smoking' sign will immediately put them out. Of course though, there's always a few who'll just tell you to F**k off and carry on anyway...........

Basically yes, that will be the situation - certainly on the 'Sub-Surface' lines, and I suspect on at least some of the tube lines too - there's already a fair bit of information around concerning the new tube stock for the Bakerloo and Victoria lines.
I suppose that nowadays it's almost inevitable that new trains will be built to a common design (and probably common components for different 'sizes' of trains as with LU) - it all helps to keep costs down.
Of course, this isn't actually something new - LU used the 'Standard' stock in the 1920's which was replaced by the ubiquitous 38 stock, which served on most tube lines. It was only in the late 50's that different stcks started appearing on a line by line basis (at least in London Transport terms).
Your 'favoured' stock is of course an example of a standard design - the current Victoria Line stock is essentially the same, and the C Stock is too, albeit with a different body arrangement.
But I understand your affection for it - though for a different reason! I did do some of my training on that stock and have some 'interesting' memories of it!
From a purely passenger point f view, I don't think the vast majority care what they are carried in - all they want is to get to their destination on time.

There's a pretty good description of TfL's roles and responsibilities at www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/abt_tfl.shtmlBut, essentially as Tom said, it's a consderable expansion of the old system and is aimed towards better integration of all modes of transport within the GLA area.

I'm starting this thread following an email from 'Sean'. I've tried to reply to it, but my reply keeps getting 'bounced', so I hope he spots it here. Sean said......... 'Prior to the amalgamation with the RMT in the early 90s there were other Unions representing the Underground Workers - the NUR and ASLEF being the only ones I can think of. Can you remember the names (and acronyms) of the others which possibly may have applied to the Guards and/or the Station Staff or even the Signallers. I remember the name of a Union cropping up quite regularly in the 60s and 70s - and definitely relating to the Underground - which was different from those mentioned above and, quite possibly, encompassed all Union Members. Does it ring a bell?' I replied........ 'Yes it does ring a bell, though - I have to say - it's well before my time! But I know several staff who read the site have more service than I, and may well be able to respond to this. Can I suggest that you post the question on my forum at districtdave.proboards39.com/index.cgi - use the 'General Questions and Answers' section, and I'm sure you'll get an informed response pretty quickly!' Can anyone add to this? And I hope Sean sees this and doesn't think I'm ignoring his mail!

Thanks for putting up that timely reminder.
I did notice it on the BBC News web site just before I went into work, but didn't have time to make reference to it.
Although it occured long before I worked 'on the job' I remember the incident well.
My thoughts go out to all involved, be they survivors, families of those who lost their lives, staff or passengers.
