It's not a problem for the train, if you download (as an example) a section of CCTV footage it would date/time stamp it and state if it is Zulu +1. So from that point of view it's fine, but you couldn't use this for the passenger saloon as it would cause confusion. I had never heard of Zulu time until I joined this project! Have you been lucky enough to go into an IMR that still has a binary clock? Now they are interesting with faces full of nothing but ones and zeroes. There were still a few about but they were gradually disappearing. Brian

Brian When we had the May meet and a tour around the system we all made a point of stopping off at Archway to peer at the V frame and binary clock visible through the door on the SB platform. One day I'll get round to making one for home.

There are clocks fitted on the TMS on 95ts, and on 92ts, but they are usually +/-1 hour or more.... and the 96 stock. In the passenger cars I have seen clocks built into the customer info screen on Heathrow connect trains, Chiltern line trains and maybe some others. I think its a good idea. The 96 stock clocks were ridiculous it took the fitters weeks and weeks to get them all to the right time after the clocks went forward/backwards. It would make sense to allow the drivers to change the time then they would all be right a day or two after.. but its too much responsibility to change the time of a clock for a mere driver also I mean how hard would it be to have them radio controlled... not that hard im sure

Whilst living up to my reputation for finding old threads, I stumbled across this gem from 2005.........which includes links to images of binary clocks: www.districtdave.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=Signals&action=display&thread=1128105855

Given the inclusion of centrally-located side-scrolling destination/announcement displays I can't imagine that it would be difficult to include a clock.

There has been nothing mentioned to us staff TOK - hence the lack of specific answers to your question; I suspect you'll need prjb to spot this thread as he'd be the only one that's likely to know..........

Sorry Onekea, my 'PC' is not my friend at the moment! The 'S' Stock will not be featuring a clock for the passenger saloon. The possibility of TFT Screens for customer information in the saloon are still on the agenda though if thats any consolation.

Ahem! General feet shuffling. I have just reviewed a document regarding TFT screens for the 'S' Stock. If this proposal gets the go-ahead then the TFT screens will feature a clock. Sorry to back track but this document has only just been released so it was news to me! I thought I would post straight away rather than wait in order not to mislead you.

TFT screens in the passenger areas? You upgrade/builder bods do realise these trains will go east of Barking at night........don't you? ;D ;D ;D ;D Haha! I expect that someone has invented the vandal proof TFT screen especially for the public transport environment otherwise it would surely be a non-starter. In my years on the railway I saw the most vandal proof items wrecked by vandals though it took them much longer than usual. Neumann SAPs (Station Announcement Points) were designed to be vandal proof but I have seen some of those badly abused though generally not beyond repair and they are probably more robust than the later Millbank variety installed on section 12 stations. Perhaps the most vandalised items were telephones, many of which were no doubt tampered with deliberately by staff in some places though it was difficult to prove and impossible to pin down to any one culprit without the assistance of covert surveillance. I suspect that new trains will bring additional new technology in the form of both overt and covert surveillance and monitoring such that drivers performance is continuously monitored as well as passenger behaviour and train performance. I don't know but I can't help thinking that something akin to the black (bright orange) box flight recorder will be installed in all cabs at some point to further automate the gathering and preservation of evidence not only for the investigation of incidents but also as an aid to train maintenance. This would be a natural extension of the seen and unseen surveillance facilities present on stations and in other parts of the Underground network and I would expect it to be introduced sooner rather than later and new train stock is the ideal place to begin!

Well the newer LU stock do have data recorders and the more modern (computer) signalling equipment records every button. Plus (as rail Technician knows!) all auto phones to the line control rooms and to the Fault Report Centre, Track Access and Power Control are all recorded and on Connect all calls and texts are recorded and an e-mail of the content can be sent in 2 hours!

Yes indeed all critical communications are recorded! Obviously I will say no more than that except that in this day and age it is no more than common sense to assume that one is watched, listened to, recorded and catalogued wherever one may be but especially in the capital and particularly when using or working in public transport.
