I beleive that Kennington siding will accomodate 2 seven car trains. Is that the case and would it be the longest underground reversing siding if it is?

The physical tunnel is 12 cars long, but the signalling only permits a 6-car train. At one time there was a shunt signal at the current end of the siding that allowed access to the remainder.

It used to accommodate two trains, there was a fixed Trainstop half way down, if a train was required to go to the end (very rarely done), the driver would trip past the fixed Trainstop and pull up to the sand drag at the end.

In that case it sounds very similar to Down Street siding on the Piccadilly. Prior to the Moorgate accident in 1974 there was a shunt signal halfway along and 2 trains could be stabled overnight there. Paths for this were listed in the Working Timetable, for use when Cockfosters Depot was sub-zero during the winter.

Just as an aside, are 24 points the ones that were originally of the spring trailing type? I do know that a set of spring trailing points were present somewhere at Kennington and that they were lifted in 1999 due to HMRI concerns.

What's a spring trailing point? Trailing points are those where lines converge in the direction of running: ----->---/------------ --------/ I'm guessing a spring trailing point is one which is spring-operated ( ) i.e the blades would be pushed across by the train itself, without any intervention from motors etc.

A spring trailing point is a type that have no motor or engine to work them. They will lie in the position that the wheels of the last train to pass over them pushed them. They will be held there by a spring. I have heard them called 'Clap points' as when the wheels pass through them they go over with a loud 'clap'.
There are sets at Minories junction OR and the west end of Barking flyover

Someone else posted a list for the Piccadilly, but I don't know what it stated.

TOK is right for the list for the District. The only ones he has omitted are the set at the west end of Barking flyover where the road from the bay joins the main. The proper name for them all is 'Spring Toggle Points'

A few errors in that list There are no Spring Toggle points at Tower Hill, Mansion House or Earl's Court. There are however, as Q8 says, a set at the bottom of the flyover leaving Barking W/B. The other 2 sets are at High Street Ken W/B, where the Edgware Road branch joins the roads from pfms 3 & 4, and also approaching Acton Town on the E/B, where the Picc fast from Northfields crosses to the local line. Also the Ealing Broadway set are on the E/B where pfm 7 joins the other lines.

Prior to the re-signalling of the area the set at Aldgate East eb were air worked and used to have the last home signal right next to them in the 6ft. In the same place as the wb starter is now. Which was what is now the repeater on the headwall.
