New one on me but someone will no doubt enlighten me. So next Tuesday and Wednesday, the Rail Roughness Measurement Train formed of 1973 stock will be running on all parts of the line except Rayners Lane to Uxbridge. Do we have a train hidden away somewhere with some special equipment on it? Fish?

No different to a number of other test trains that run - passenger stock with specialist equipment temporarily added in board. The train runs empty and - presumably - measures the roughness of the rails. Whilst the purpose is different it's essentially the same as when the Auto-Visual Inspection Trains run using cameras and lighting attached to the front end.
With the unavailability of the Track Recording Train other methods are required to carry out certain inspections at the required intervals, with others being better suited to the line's own stock rather than the TRT.

what is roughness in this context? presumably some level of corrugation to the rail-head? Is it discernible to persons on the train (depending on the size of corrugation it could presumably be anything from noise through vibration to actual "rough riding")
One has visions of it being measured by a line of carefully-filled cups of tea, each with a calibrated saucer to measure the spillage... (although the Great Western presumably used martinis, if Brideshead Revisited is to be believed...)

I saw the track recording train last night stabled on the reception road for Acton Works Minus the actual recording car. Its still sat on the jacks inside TMU (unless this has changed since yesterday, was not in today). TRV is due to be inside for another 4 weeks

Well didn’t notice how many cars it had but was definitely a cravens unit and the front facing Acton Works I reported this on the 67 stock remaining units page yesterday. Just the 2 Cravens units together with the 2 67 stock cars. Still there today.
