A brief item in this months Tramway & Urban Transit announces that in five years' time or so Essen intends to replace all its current standard-gauge Stadtbahn stock, including the ex-DLR P86 and P89 stock that was sold to them secondhand and converted to overhead current collection/manual operation. Does anyone know if TfL has any plans to repatriate an example of this stock for the Museum, given its significance to London transport history?

I'd think it unlikely, given that the TfL museum only managed to preserve a single car of each of the A60/62 C69/77 and D78 stocks, but I suppose that we should never say never.

If it were me, I'd preserve a B90 car as a more typical DLR vehicle that represents DLR in its current purpose rather than its humble beginnings.

In an idea world we'd have a P86, a B92 and a B07 preserved.

Perhaps the one that should be preserved is P86 No.11, as this unit carried H. M. The Queen when the system opened.
Alas, this has already been scrapped. I do not know the reason why. All the rest still survive.

Possibly there was a hardcore royalist somewhere who still bore a grudge about 1939-45, and decided "No train that carried Our Monarch will ever carry those who might once have fought against our nation!".

I think, many years ago,when they were withdrawn from DLR service there was a discussion with LTM about preserving one. The fact they went on to a new life also assisted in putting off the evil hour of decision! LTM’s problem is space - in terms of collections policy I would have thought that some item of DLR stock is a contender at some point.

I've spent three days nipping back to this post, and I'm still baffled by this concept. It seems to suggest that Darlington's North Road museum would do better exchanging Geo. Stephensons's old 'No.1' for one of the new Class 66 types, to represent how things are today, rather than in the railway's infancy. It would certainly make conservation easier. You could just keep it in service, and put the Museum information on the side!
