Does anybody know why this is? I had a look on TfL and could only find that it is exit only at the moment. I would guess there is lift work going on?
thanks

"Goodge Street station is closed due to staff absence."
I'm not sure if the mornings issues are related to why it was exit only when you arrived.
Unfortunately we live in a time where corporations are more willing to give out information on their twitter handle to retain some semblance of a "public image" rather than display their information, clearly I might add, on their websites.

The station is exit only during (and a little after) morning peak from September the 17th until Oct next year.
It seems unlikely that this is due to lift work as by their very nature lifts (particularly those with separate entrances and exits) don't really suffer from extra congestion when there is two way traffic.
Given Goodge Street's unusual separated flow structure, it will be very interesting to learn the reasons for this restriction - if anyone here knows.

According to the FFTF Station by Station Review for the Northern Line Goodge Street has a minimum staffing level of two from 05:30 until 06:30 when it rises to three then goes up to four at 08:00 before going back down to three at 09:30. It goes back up to four between 16:30 and 19:00 finally going down to two after 21:00 until close of traffic.
Goodge Street is part of Northern Cover Group C which also includes Tottenham Court Road, Warren Street and Camden Town (but not Mornington Crescent which is Cover Group A), if they're short staffed its obvious why they'd decide to shut Goodge Street rather than the other three.

But does not explain why they are going to have an 'exit only' policy that includes the period when they have maximum staffing whilst allowing entry during most of the time they have minimal. I suspect that this planned restriction does not have anything to do with staffing.

It makes me suspect that there is work going on in one of the passageways such that only one side of the lift is available for passenger use, and that the open passageway cannot cope with two-way traffic during the morning peak but is able to accommodate everyone off peak and during the (generally more spread out) evening peak.

Indeed, staff from Goodge Street were being used to keep Warren Street open. I don't know for sure but I've assumed the exit-only plan for September 2017-October 2018 would be due to lift works, probably two at a time. Not many people enter at Goodge Street during the morning peak anyway but you do get loads of people exiting the station, staff are already used to control the lifts manually and assist customer flow. With only two lifts in service, it'll start blocking back downstairs and having the lifts sent down empty as soon as they've deposited customers upstairs, this will help it not get too crowded.

If it was for lift work, wouldn't the posters stuck inside the station simply say that the reason was lift refurbishment? At the moment the posters are giving no reasons whatsoever. When the lifts at Covent Garden were replaced (refurbished?), it was made clear that this was the reason.
