Having commuted on the Victoria line for many years it's very noticeable how much quieter Pimlico is compared to other stations on the line (and almost all other Z1 stations for that matter.). If the Victoria line were being built today it's hard to see how a station would be justified there. Was there some anticipated future demand at the time the line was built that failed to transpire?

If I remember rightly, it wasn't justified at the time of building. It was, I believe, the first 'Victoria Line extension'.

It was to serve a previously unserved area. I used it on the first day of service - there were a few people around. But it's more like an outer station really.

According to TfL figures, 11.4m Entry/Exit occurred there in 2016, so it's not that quiet I'd have said

It was, I believe, the first 'Victoria Line extension'. Pimlico opened after the Brixton extension had been opened to passengers, thus the last Victoria Line station to open.

How else would you get to the Tate Gallery?

Isn't Tate Britain only about 8 minutes walk from the station? I'm presuming that the station was built there for the Tate. On the Clarke announcements on the 67s an exit for the museum was announced.

Tate Britain is quite near, yes. Then Millbank Tower and Thames House (MI5 HQ) is next door again. There's quite a lot of footfall in the peaks based on experience...

...In fact, passport control is often overstretched at those times...

On the Clarke announcements on the 67s an exit for the museum was announced. Was this Ken Clarke MP after a visit to one of the bars in the HofP? Where was this exit going to be built? It's not like the subway under Exhibition Road from Sth Ken. Check out Google Map to see what I mean. And for those of you who don't know 'Passport to Pimlico' was filmed in Lambeth. On Lambeth Road opposite Hercules Road, there is a council estate. That was the location when it was a bomb site. Check out 'Reel Streets' web page as well

Was this Ken Clarke MP after a visit to one of the bars in the HofP? Not Ken, but Emma, whose recorded voice was used for the announcements, telling you where to get off. (using the existing entrance, not advising you to dig a new one......) And for those of you who don't know 'Passport to Pimlico' was filmed in Lambeth. On Lambeth Road opposite Hercules Road, there is a council estate. That was the location when it was a bomb site. Check out 'Reel Streets' web page as well Quite coincidentally, Pimlico Plumbers have their headquaters there now.

You can see the Pimlico Plumbers HQ on any train leaving Waterloo (presumably including fast trains to Norbiton). Sorry but wrong side of the river for Pimlico.

I believe pimlico is the only station on the Vic that has no interchange facilities with either LU or Network rail lines. It hasn't even got a surface building.

There is a big residential estate in Pimlico. Churchill Gardens is a large housing estate in the Pimlico area of Westminster, Which, when it was built was heated by the waste heat of Battersea Power Station.

Fifty years later and Chelsea is equally vociferous in NOT wanting a station there. "We can't have these football johnnies despoiling the heighbourhood" Ironically when Ken Bates took over Chelsea FC he enquired about re-opening the station, on the premise that the away supporters wouldn't have to travel via Central London. I do remember reading many years ago quite a comprhensive study was carried out, especially as to where the supporters trains would be parked up during the match.

I do remember reading many years ago quite a comprhensive study was carried out, especially as to where the supporters trains would be parked up during the match. The proposed XR2 station on the Kings Road in Chelsea would be over a mile from the Stamford Bridge football ground (which is actually in Fulham - the West London Line which forms the boundary runs alongside the stadium). There was a station (Chelsea & Fulham Road) until 1940, but proposals to reopen it were not taken up and Chelsea fans have to use Fulham Broadway (whereas the nearest station to Fulham Football Club's ground is Putney Bridge)

I recall a public meeting about 1991 where Chris Green (then at Network South East) was very clear that a stop at Stamford Bridge was not favoured.
