Hmm the tank looks rather like a T34 - so possibly Potsdamer Platz/Russian WW2 memorial in the former [East] Berlin

No idea where it is, but the driver needs to be *very* careful to select reverse gear.

Another go then - I'm pretty sure it's not in the UK given the rather strange industrial framework in the background. Secondly, I've only ever seen these sorts of displays in the former Warsaw Pact countries [and Former Yugoslavia] - I think tanks on plinths are pretty much unknown in the UK. However, T34s were used pretty widely - so definitely somewhere in Eastern Europe.

The report on the horrendous accident on the Castlemartin gunnery range in Wales, showd a Cheiftain tank on a plynth by the gates.

I think tanks on plinths are pretty much unknown in the UK. Except this one No idea where the quiz picture is though. It's not the one in Berlin - background is far too rural and hilly.

Apologies John & Norbitonflyer - I meant a sloping sort of plinth rather than a Trafalgar Square-like horizontal one.

We'll post the answer in about 24 hours, per the usual. If I manage to think of any more clues between now and then I'll post them when I do!

It's not Stalingrad, but you're in the right country. I don't know enough history of the area to know if it is the sire of a famous victory or not and I'm not in a position currently to easily check.

The battle for Stalingrad is often cited as the beginning of the end for the German army in WW2. General Paulus and his 6th army, were surrounded by the Russians, and when they ran out of food and ammunition, they surrendered. This defeat is often cited by military historians as the pivital point of WW2, so I'm presuming that there is a huge monument somewhere in the area of the battle.

I would expect so, but if there is Dmitri, who is the only person to have sent me photos from Russia, hasn't given me any photos to use for the quiz. He has sent me a PM noting that the location of this tank was the site of fierce strategic battles, but not ones he would describe as "internationally famous".

I've had a rummage online. Even knowing the detail of the tank it proved taxing to find detail. This lack of information leads me to believe that there was no significant international conflict here. That's not to say there wasn't any fighting as about a mile away from the tank there is a large monument celebrating the defence of the port.

Assuming that it wasn't one of the Baltic states and not somewhere well known like Leningrad, then I would guess that the port clue dropped by Rincew1nd would be a Black Sea port such as Odessa or even Sevastopol.

Right sea, wrong settlement

Well Chris, the two areas on the Black Sea coastline that had major land conflicts between the Soviet union and the Axis powers were Kerch and Simferopol with especially nasty anti-partisan operations taking place so if I had to make an educated guess, I'd go for Simferopol as that is very close to the major port of Sevastapol.

It's neither Kerch nor Simferopol, indeed it's not in Crimea
