Hello all,
Just a random question that popped into my head the other day. Is there a reason why Tube trains have a whistle where as national rail have the two tone horn?

I remember that thread. I must be turning into an 'old timer'. My thought at the time was 'why did main-line railways change from a whistle to a horn?' would be a better question to start with, leaving the 'two-tone' bit for later.

All whistle on all tube stock are all the same, they are all network rail approved and all one standard type, Westinghouse made and very expensive.

'why did main-line railways change from a whistle to a horn?' Originally whistles were powered by steam from the boiler. On the Tube they used compressed air from the braking system. Early diesel and electric main line trains had vacuum brakes (and no boiler), but did have electricity, so an electric horn was easier to fit.

No the whistle works of the Main line air not the braking system.

You need to look at a air diagram of a train then.
