Stockwell on the Northern Line. Bang on. It is the site of the original Stockwell station opened in 1890. The lighting serves to highlight the shape of the tunnel which, you will note, is not round. Although the running tunnels on the C&SLR were formed from cast iron segments, the tunnels at the original six stations were built of brick - a unique feature on London's deep-level tube system. Stockwell is the largest example of such a tunnel and its most prominent feature is the strange curve to the lower section of the tunnel; this being a result of its brick construction. The dark area just inside the distant southbound (right hand) running tunnel is the approach to the old incline that led to Stockwell depot. I think that I may be able to find a more difficult subject for you tomorrow. |
