The S stock appears to have very narrow passenger entry / exit doors at the part of the passenger saloon closest to the driver cab ends.
I've been trying with the naked eye to tell which doors are larger - the single leaf on the D stock or the narrow end doors close to the drivers cabs on the S.
Does anybody know?

You are correct in your observation, the front doors are slightly narrower on S stocks so that the front doors and driver door can open simultaneously. The S front doors are 1210mm throughway, compared to 1127mm on D stock. Source

S-Stock have been in service for about seven years now and I've never noticed this. Thanks both for asking the question and providing the answer so swiftly!

Were the Uniformly spaced Jumbo Single Doors on the D stock really that bad? - I use the Class 465's which have two narrow pairs of doors per car, and the Class 465's give satisfactory dwell times on the platform.

My experience is that D stocks were slower at platforms than C or S when there are a lot of passengers getting off and on. Flow wasn't much better than 4 standard single doors. Nice and cheap to build though which was important at the time. D stock was specified at a time of falling ridership. The train is just 111m long replacing 'R' stock which some years earlier had been running as 8 car trains about 128m long. S7 is almost 119m.

The door openings were narrower, so harder for two people to pass through at once.
And as the doors were bigger, they had to travel further to close. Both factors affected dwell time.

C stock Trailer car doorways about 36% of the car length I seem to recall.

C stock Trailer car doorways about 36% of the car length I seem to recall. A little more than that. According to "Tubeprune"s website, the standard door opening width on the Underground is 5 feet and a C stock trailer is 14940mm (49 feet) long. Four door openings are therefore 20/49 (nearly 41%) of the length. A DM is 16030mm so 20/52.6 = 38% (or 42% if you include the driver's door). Unless the doors overlap in the open position, they cannot exceed 50% of the car length.

I'll be 'in town' over the Bank Holiday weekend, and one of my plans was to take a closer look at the 'S' stock! PS. Is there only one set of S8 with the narrow single door?

The first/last set are a smaller set of double doors than the others. Understood! I've looked at it on the diagram. A narrow pair, just on the Driving Motors. How do M1/M2 differ from each other?

Thanks everyone for the info.. I'm planning a trip from Marylebone to Baker Street via Amersham, to compare services over the Met & GC joint line. Should find plenty of S8s along there!
