According to TfL tweets retweeted by "Tweet the Tube" services on portions of the Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City and District Lines plus the entire Circle Line are cancelled due to a lack of "Control Staff" I have never heard of this happening before. It looks to me, given the lines involved, to be a localised issue on the Sub Surface network. The Picc is affected because of the interface with the Met at Rayners Lane. I'd not be astonished if there has been an "event" affecting a member or members of control staff that has resulted in what looks like unpredictable, unofficial action. It's rare, IME, for control staff to act like this. As ever, happy to be corrected. |

Under the Sub Surface signals upgrade a new control centre for the four lines and the Piccadilly was being built at Hammersmith, I'm not sure if they've moved there yet but if they had that would explain why all those lines were affected. Possibly someone got the flu, they're all shut up together in a room and now everyone else has it so there's a sudden unforeseen staff shortage
Earl's Court was (is?) the District west of Tower Hill up to High Street Kensington and the Piccadilly between Cockfosters, Heathrow and South Harrow. Rayner Lane signal box for everything between South Harrow and Uxbridge.
Baker Street was the Met apart from the bit shared with the Piccadilly, the rest of the Circle and H&C. Not sure about the District Line out to Upminster.

Piccadilly will be controlled from Pelham Street once it's ready and Hammersmith is ready to go for SSL.
Baker St does the District around Aldgate junction plus Aldgate East
Whitechapel cabin just does Whitechapel now
Barking cabin does Bromley By Bow to Dagenham East
Upminster cabin does Hornchurch to Upminster
Upminster Depot Tower cabin does Upminster Depot

Control Desk was running with the minimum level of two staff, so it was decided for both staff to have a break at the same time. Hence the disruption.

If there are only two staff, and the room cannot operate with fewer than that then both having their meal break at the same time is sensible - if they go together you have no service for 30 minute, if they go consecutively you have no service for 60 minutes (assuming meal breaks are 30 minutes, but the logic is the same however long they are).
The actual problem is that the room was running with the minimum number of staff in the first place as you need minimum +1 to allow for meal breaks.

Baker Street was the Met apart from the bit shared with the Piccadilly, the rest of the Circle and H&C. Not sure about the District Line out to Upminster. Not quite Baker Street does Minories Junction and Aldgate East to around Preston Road. Harrow-on-the-Hill cabin takes over at Northwick Park and controls the line essentially as far as Moor Park and West Harrow, although the northbound fast doesn't even have any track circuit indications on the panel diagram. Rickmansworth cabin then takes over from Moor Park to Watford and Rickmansworth, before Amersham cabin takes over around Chorleywood to take us to Chesham and Amersham, fringing with Marylebone IECC to the north, of course, which handles the Chiltern line as far as Aylesbury and Aylesbury Vale Parkway. Edgware Road is still handled by Edgware Road cabin and Hammersmith (Met) by Hammersmith cabin. |

So much easier on the Central Line, you have Wood Lane unless you are moving in Ruislip or Hainault depot. I should have remembered Edgware Road as that was the first place I worked when I joined as an Station Assistant in December 1997.

It's very, very straightforward everyone..............
You do it like any other decent publication would. The first time you mention a potential acronym in a thread you use the Full Monty version, for example "Platform Train Interface" with "(PTI) in brackets afterwards. Thereafter feel free to use the acronym as and when. Obviously, if the acronym (with its prior explanation) has been used up-thread prior to your post then the initial explanation is unnecessary. It's the polite way to proceed and not open for argument.
This is in green. Mod-Shock. Sort it out please, it's bloody simple.
