I thought that this might be of interest. Enjoy! Simon Prior to fleetwide refurbishment of the London Transport Piccadilly Line 1973 Tube Stock trains the three-car unit No.190 (which comprises cars Nos: 190 - 390 - 590 ) was refurbished in a way that included new car end windows and luggage racks in the central seating bays. It was also repainted in a slightly modified version of corporate livery, this being that the red was a little darker than on the other train fleets. Each car in unit 190 was finished slightly differently, with changes including different seat layouts, fabric trims and some door standback areas being different sizes. Because of the installation of a door closing beep alarm the electric circuits for the passenger doors were also modified and to allow a full six-car train to run unit No.123 also received the door circuit modifications. This video includes footage from Gloucester Road, Chiswick Park and Northfields stations plus the 1990 Morden Depot open day. Music: On the Cool Side. Very interesting video!
The interior looks quite similar to the Tickford/Rosyth refurbished 67/72 stock, with the same style handrails, ceiling fans, emergency alarms, armrests and lights etc.
I would be interested to know if there is anything unique about 190-590-390 that still stands out today, despite going through the standard refurbishment. Does anyone know?

At last we have video footage of this! Thank you very much for posting this. Having only ever seen photographs, I wasn't completely aware of the arrangement at car ends; I see there were 'jump seats' fitted and a grab bar going across the windows. I am pleased what they had planned for the middle of the cars - the transverse mix and ugly luggage racks - never materialised.

An interesting video, thanks for creating and sharing. In the Morden depot shots, what's the train in the background with the blue stripe high on the bodyside and/or blue doors?

The original approval paper for 73 stock included a statement that there would be provision for luggage.
My boss, the then Marketing Manager, and others believed this to be racks. The paper was approved on this basis.
No other train service to an airport has trains without luggage provision.
The 73 stock had to make do with a few vinyls asking you to put your cases on the floor by the doors.
This video shows what might have been done at mid life but it was again abandoned.

It was done as a trial livery before the corporate livery was agreed. It was a 72 stock. Ran for a while in this livery.

There was also a '67 Stock unit, a 2-car C Stock and 4-car A Stock in the top blue livery.

I can't remember if it is Mk I or Mk II. Three units of mark 1 stock had trial liveries. One had the livery that became standard. One had the blue top, and the third, seen below, picture from Tubeprune, had blue doors. The 1973 train appears to have been parked between the latter two at the Morden depot visit, thereby demonstrating all three proposed liveries side by side. And here's the C stock in blue top livery

There must be a way of designing luggage racks that don't look like something from a hospital. It's hard to combine quick loading/unloading with luggage provision. Like the Metropolitan main line, two distinct types of stock are required, and the result can only be a compromise.

crusty54 I guess that the with racks version was motivated by the contemporary Heathrow Surface Access Study for which LU offered an express Piccadilly option.

What are the luggage facilities like on the 'normal' Heathrow trains? (Do 'normal' trains run to Heathrow?)

More like IKEA than a hospital in this case but functional is all that really matters I suppose!

An interesting video, thanks for creating and sharing. In the Morden depot shots, what's the train in the background with the blue stripe high on the bodyside and/or blue doors? Either a 1967 or 1972 Mkl tube stock train. They were both there (one on each side of the 1973 Tube Stock train) and can be seen in the Morden Depot film. Thanks to everyone for your appreciative comments. Simon

I posted a photo the other day in the IOW thread of the IOW tube I was on in 1985 and you can clearly see the converted seats to pale green luggage racks in that photo.
