sailor's jack knife syndrome Interestingly, Google does not show up any complete result for this search which leads me to believe that you have ( possible inadvertently) made it up! Is it another term for the medieval axe syndrome, where someone claims to have medieval axe (whose handle has been changed two dozen times and whose head has been changed a dozen)? (Also, apparantly, missing from Google search.) Sounds about right from context, but jackknives don't really look as if the parts are easily replaceable. |

Coming from a neurology background as I do, it made me think of jackknife syndrome which is where spasms send the arms out stiff and straight and causes the body to double over. It used to be called Salaam syndrome after an exaggerated form of the Arabic greeting portrayed in Holywood films. Could't see the relevance to the age of rolling stock, excepting that it often manifests in young children who otherwise appeared neurologically fine. Why sailor's, no idea. I think your medieval axe idea aka Trigger's Broom, sounds a plausible interpretation.

@class411 trt yes, it's supposed to be another variant of Trigger's broom/axe story - I first came across it in relation to the Glasgow tram fleet where on some standard cars, the body had been rebuilt, the trucks replaced and only the frames survived. stapler - Don't worry; contributors to this site will shortly organise a whipround to replace your ageing kit... [BTW, do Christmas lights go out* of date in technology terms - mine always seem pretty basic?] *"Go out" , of course, only too frequently. |

Christmas lights. Yes. They're all LED nowadays, are they not?
It seems an age since the quint-art carriages, lit by a single tungsten filament bulb in the centre of each compartment (except the ex-2nds and 1sts, which had two (?)) just so you could see the prints of Thaxted and Kersey but not easily read the Star... not to mention the fog effect of everyone smoking. The S stock is lit up like the Crystal Palace by comparison.

IMO not so much don't read press releases.... but instead assume, without researching properly first.... Never assume, as it'll make an ASS out of U and ME !!! For those who want, or need, to know when Crossrail will really open/start.... look HEREI wonder whether funding cuts have affected the Beeb, that it sadly can't afford proper journalists now.... with a vulture, in the form of Murdoch, flying overhead, looking to pick off the best bits and might be privatised !!!
