could anyone point me in the right direction for any images or link to images of a class 378 unit with the cab front end door open ? I understand the class 313 - 315 ( & 507/508?) units had a unique ladder that clipped on the front step allowing easy access to detrain in tunnels or elsewhere - versus the more regular two part emergency ladders common in 'guards van' and emergency equipment cabinets on train. Thanks to anyone able to assist

That design is also used on Hong Hong's MTR Metro trains - may have been brought over by MTR, when Laing and MTR were appointed to run the Overground in 2007.

Surely if this unit is running on 4 rail track the ladder plonks straight onto the neg:rail and balances on a point about 4/5 inches wide?

Surely if this unit is running on 4 rail track the ladder plonks straight onto the neg:rail and balances on a point about 4/5 inches wide? I imagine that in those areas, they can evacuate through the side doors (as you might a normal train). The front evacuation door is required for the narrow single bore tunnels where you can't evacuate out of the side.

I suspect that it is designed that it doesn't contact fourth rail (i.e. it stops higher than it), and is entirely supported by the body of the train rather than the ground.

When it lowered in the video it app[eared to whack down heavily on the ground filmed in a depot over a pit with a board across the gap. Less of a drop than out on the track.

The board is flush with the running rails. Sleepers would be lower, but the negative rail would be higher.

Except between Gunnersbury and Richmond where the fourth rail is in place (actually up towards South Acton Junction if we're going to be pedantic).

Isn't it there to provide a return current path?
Anyway, we drift...

Yes!
I presume that the Driver will be operating the doors and he will have already called up to have the power turned off before use. Perhaps there is an interlock as well.

Let me just reiterate.
1. The stairs are fully supported by the train itself. 2. The stairs would only be used in a situation where there has already been an Emergency Switch Off of the current. 3. The stairs would only be used in locations where there isn't a fourth rail in the four-foot (Primarilay ELL Core Route). 4. The stairs are used as a last resort only and the door and stairs are a PITA to close back up again.
