From the October Quiz - day 5 thread because I think this question deserves it's own thread: Answer: Canonbury - exterior  (click for a larger version) What an impressive station entrance. * shakes head in imperious dismay * Can anyone think of a less-impressive station building? I'd be well-curious to see. A few years ago now I did a book for my photo course about all the stations on the Overground circle (Clapham Junction-Wilesden Junction-Highbury & Islington-Surrey Quays-Clapham Junction), which entailed reading quite a bit all the stations. I can't immediately find the exact quote, or correctly attribute it, but the building on that route that got the worst reviews was Hampstead Heath - "compared unfavourably with a public toilet" was the phrase I used I believe. |

There are a lot of North London Line candidates, probably to do with years or next to no investment! Finchley Road & Frognal is particularly dull. Although at least there are Station buildings, as at the newly built/refurbished Lea Bridge station has no ticket office whatsoever!

The old NLR station at Bow was a fantastic building. As a child I remember it being a prominent landmark if we drove into or through London.

Don't you mean the old NLR station at South Bromley? The Bow station was quite IMPRESSIVE with the music hall etc: above it.

Where to start ? S Bermondsey in NSE days had a reputation as the worst on the network, and was used as an actual public lavatory; Shoreditch used to look like a long-abandoned shed... Sudbury and Harrow Road was difficult to identify as a "live" station from the street.

I am rarely in the West Harrow area but found myself there during the Uxbridge line steam train event in December 2013 (or was it 2014?) To my astonishment I discovered that this station has corrugated metal features that made me wonder if they had been recovered from an Anderson shelter.
I think that Hillingdon is an awful station. Yes its modern but the cheapo outdoor lights on white RSJ type supports, peeling paint and dirty glass gives it a very down at heel ambiance.

I passed through Hillingdon a couple of weeks back and it really did feel so much more neglected and run down than almost any other station. It makes me wonder if it's being used as the example they can point to to show what happens when they don't get money for refurbishments, etc. Either that or something very major is in the works for the area that mean anything other than the most basic maintenance isn't justified.

I don't really reckon stations with no building should count, even WoodSiding seems to have had something going for it. I guess what I meant was really bad buildings a la South Kenton, Finchley Road and Frognal and Canonbury above. Was John Poulson involved here, by any chance?

There are of course some with no building at ground level, but something really impressive underground, eg Gants Hill. On the other hand, there are some with little on top and little underneath!

Northumberland Park and Angel Road are grim. The latter is one of the deadest stations in London, so you'll more than likely be on your own. Set within an industrial estate and the North Circular going overhead. Must be fun after dark.

Even though it wasn't the station concerned I couldn't help but think of "An American Werewolf In London" when I was there in the early noughties. Even during the day it was almost deserted.......with echoing noises......   |

Mill Hill Broadway is busier than that, but still far from the nicest station in London, with busy roads and very grim environment at street level.
