I was just watching one of the old videos posted on another thread and noticed that most of the blue station entrance canopies and fascias had the name of the station but also the lines that served it in illuminated lettering. This policy appears to have been discontinued nowadays with just the station name shown. Does anybody know why they removed the information as to which line(s) are available?

I suppose the logic behind this is that most people use the closest underground station to wherever they happen to be, knowing that they will be able to change lines where necessary in order to reach their desrination.

The line names are retained at Edgware Road where clarification is needed for the two stations on different lines. As you enter a station you will see signs and diagrams with line names and the appropriate colour stripe.

True, but if you happen to be in the Ruislip area, you really want to go to an appropriate station if you want the Central or Piccadilly lines. It must be some kind of an LU record that, for two lines that cross each other (TWICE!, before meeting at Holborn), from Ruislip/West Ruislip you need to go at least nineteen stops with no change or 10 stops with three changes (E&OE), to change lines.

But having Metropolitan or Central line on the fascia won't help you. Decision needs to be made well before you get to the station.
The decision to remove the line names was researched with real people.
