According to tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/station-closures.pdf, it seems that Lambeth North on the Bakerloo is set for closure "from 13 July 16 to mid-Febuary 2017". Given that Caledonian Road escaped such a scenario, why is Lambeth North likely to go ahead despite being near a major museum? Thanks.

Lambeth North is one of the dirtiest, scruffiest and most disgusting stations in London, combined with the fact that its two elderly lifts aren't exactly the reliable sort its about time it was given a major refurbishment and brought up to standard.

Given that Caledonian Road escaped such a scenario, why is Lambeth North likely to go ahead despite being near a major museum? Thanks. Cally Road ultimately escaped because it's a step-free station. Despite having lifts, Lambeth North isn't. The IWM is well served by local bus routes and is accessible from the Elephant and Waterloo, amongst others. Not the end of the world. Besides, the amount of additional cost that the Cally Road fiasco cost the taxpayer...

The lifts at Elephant (at least on the Northern line side) are not the most reliable in the world though - one was out of action again this evening.

Sadly this seems to be a recurring theme with many of the new lifts on the network. Covent Garden has been going exit-only a few times recently due to lift breakdowns. Anyway... *slaps self on wrist for taking things off-topic*

Isn't Lambeth North the least used station (or one of) inside zone 1 anyway?
More surprised that the works are supposedly starting on a Wednesday and before the platforms at Paddington are back open (not that the stations are close, but how common is it to have more than one planned station closure on one line at the same time?)

Diamond Geezer reports that Lambeth North is indeed the least busy station in zone 1 (Regent's Park and Edgware Road Bakerloo are the 2nd and 3rd).

I'll be 'in town' over the Bank Holiday weekend. Might be an idea to visit Lambeth North. Is there anything interesting to look for?

there are some plaques in the ticket hall that are worth taking a minute to read. I think they're by the entrance rather than exit but it's been ages since I was there.

There's some original tiling in the spiral staircase shaft which is in not-too-bad condition. Also if you look and listen carefully you can see how a disused lift shaft and parts of the lower lift landings now form a fan shaft for the Northern Line. It's just about possible to reach the southbound Northern Line by foot from the lower lift landing, albeit via a rickety ladder and a very dusty bolthole.

There is a plaque to the engineering firm Maudslay Sons and Field whose works were on or near the site of the station. One of their beam engines can still be seen working at the London Museum of Water & Steam.

im surprised euston square isnt on the list of stations to be refurbished. This seems to be one of the oldest looking stations on the network since Holland Park was closed!

I very much doubt anything significant will happen with Euston Square until the plans for rebuilding Euston for HS2/Crossrail 2 - indeed it wouldn't surprise me if plans for upgrading Euston Square aren't designed as part of the same project even if TfL pay for it all themselves.

Maybe thats because Euston had got into such a state that not couldn't wait any longer for some upgrades (while Euston Square can). HS2, and particularly the Euston station aspect is far from a totally finalised design - having undergone several revisions already to reduce costs or to try and keep the original concept of a properly integrated station alive despite the 'silo thinking' approach being cheaper and easier to build.

Euston Square will get a direct link to Euston from the eastern end of the platforms when the HS2 works happen.
An escalator solution for Lambeth North would be useful with all the developments towards Lambeth Palace.

An escalator solution for Lambeth North would be useful with all the developments towards Lambeth Palace. An escalator connection to the soon-to-be-extended platforms at Waterloo: all those extra passengers from the longer trains have to go somewhere, and the existing barrier line and concourse can hardly cope as it is.

So glad I visited Lambeth North before refurbishment. It has been allowed to deteriorate internally, which is a shame, as it still has its distinguishing tile pattern. Will that be lost, or have we grown out of that by now? The exterior, by contrast, is both delightful and beautifully kept. It's on an 'end' now, with the adjacent building lost, and Bayliss Rd. widened. I would personally have liked to see the new 'end' wall treated to match the front, but I suppose cost and location must be considered. It would have been built to take an upper storey. Has it never had one? That would make it 'one of the few', wouldn't it? I never found the 'two elderly lifts'. The one in service was of the now-usual steel-sheet passenger-operated variety, and the out-of-use one looked exactly the same. Those of us who love old machinery are finding less and less to visit, at least outside of museums and 'heritage sites'. On my travels, I spotted another similar red frontage, this one not in transport use. It was at Hyde Park Corner, and had become an Italian restaurant. I was amazed that I had never noticed it before. Presumably it had been 'left behind' in a lift-escalator swap? Altogether an enjoyable visit. Next time I'll be looking for cable tram relics on Highgate Hill.

You are correct regarding the red frontage at Hyde Park Corner.

They had immense difficulty in even hiring out the shops at ground level & those weren't fully occupied until after WW1, so they never got near to adding an upper storey for further shopping or office space.

Just noticed the closure kicks in on a Wednesday. Any ideas as to why the closure starts on a Wednesday, and not the more usual Saturday or Monday?

I wonder if there is something happening in the area on the Monday or Tuesday? Either that or some key person or equipment isn't available until then would be my guesses.

Broken Link, it would seem I've tweaked the link so it now points to the TfL press release, if that's not what Dstock7080 intended I'm sure he'll be along to fix things in the not too distant future.
