Overhead line problems in the Hackney Wick area caused problems for most of the day, with the service suspended east of Canonbury for several hours. The service recovery was less than ideal, with trains being held at Camden Road due to pathing issues with freight trains. I was speaking to some passengers who had waited ages for a Richmond train at Highbury, were then delayed for 20 mins at Camden Road due to the freight train issue and who were then turfed off the train at Willesden Junction low level. The next two trains both terminated at Willesden, before a train came along fir Gunnersbury. The staff at Willesden were getting a lot of abuse from passengers because the information being given out was poor. Not their fault, but passengers don't care about that! The staff had to resort to asking the drivers where their trains were going.
I decided to jump on the Gunnersbury train, which at least allowed passengers to change there for a District line train to Richmond. The staff at Gunnersbury were making announcements about the fact that some Stratford services were starting from there, being reversed in the westbound service. However, they couldn't say when the trains were coming due to them not being given information from LO control.
Another Gunnersbury terminator pulls into the westbound. No announcement. I decided to use the help point, not to help me, but to tell the staff upstairs that there was a Stratford train being reversed. They hadn't been told, thanked me for telling them, then put out an announcement. That was my good deed for the day, because that train would have left virtually empty had it not been for the announcement.
LO works very well when the service is running fine, but it all seems to collapse when there are delays. There is a marked difference, it seems, between the way LU gives information and they way LO does.
