I am a new member of this forum; I do not have any technical knowledge to contribute, but hope that I may be able to add to discussion from time to time. I have a query which I hope someone may be able to answer, regarding allocation of platforms for London Overground services at Richmond. I have recently used the North London line service, which generally runs from either platform 4 or 5. In at least three cases lately a train shown as arriving at platform 4 has been changed at the last minute to arrive at platform 3; the change of arrival platform is announced, but the next departure is not changed on the station indicators. On two occasions when I have seen this happen I have guessed correctly that the train in platform 3 would be the next departure despite the indicator showing 'this train terminates here'; on the first occasion, when I only arrived 2 minutes before departure, the following train had already arrived in platform 4 so I boarded it to watch my intended departure leave from platform 3! When all of the platforms are available, why should it be necessary to make last minute changes? (There may also be a problem on updating the indicators, but if the original platform was kept this would not be a problem). Thanks for any information.

Welcome to the forum! Don't worry about not having technical knowledge - we all have to start somewhere! I'm not sure why LO trains are being switched around, but it may be something to do with the new District line trains being unable to use platform 7 - therefore requiring a reshuffle of everything else, but that is rather speculative. Might I suggest using this neat little website to try and second guess the system before you arrive. If you regularly use the same train, you can recognise it's headcode and bee-line for it's platform. If you use a variety of trains and want to know which is the first out, head for the train starting "2NXX" with the lowest digits after the 2N part. Trains starting with 2O are district line services. NB - during disruption, don't rely on the website, because in the event of out-of-sequence running, it won't run according to plan - listen to announcements!

So does that mean that S7s can now go everywhere they'll ever be able to go (apart from the depot roads that still need commissioning)?

So does that mean that S7s can now go everywhere they'll ever be able to go (apart from the depot roads that still need commissioning)? Basically yes! Mansion House is the obvious one, along with Hammersmith siding, Dagenham East siding and 22 23 24 25 26 sidings at Acton Town. Some speed restrictions apply to S7 Stock only, through Kew Gardens BOTH for example. (The Richmond restriction lifting was mentioned briefly here: districtdavesforum.co.uk/post/407012 ) Let's keep the S Stock questions in the usual place.

Due to signal sighting problems for our 5 car units we are unable to use platform 5 at Richmond hence the reason why platform 3 is in use. I believe that once the new signal in platform 5 has become live & signed off it shouldn't be too long before our trains start using platform 5 again.

The reasons for the platform alterations have been explained, but not the poor information.
That is the responsibility of the operator of the station. SWT's record at giving information even on its own trains is less than perfect, but it does its best to shrug off any responsibility at all for clients of other operators using its stations (try Wimbledon, where the staff always deny any knowledge of the other four operators using the station)

I often use Richmond to go to Kew Gardens for the National Archive. The last couple of occasions I have missed the first trains because of indicator trouble - not showing all trains etc. The last occasion, the cheerful member of Staff wrongly directed me.
What really amazed me, however, if the next train indicator on the Richmond Platform at Kew gardens, which fooled me first time. For LO it shows the train time - then Richmond, which makes sense. But for the District Line, it shows the start station, so that whilst the time is correct, it may show the Richmond service as High Street Kensington, which i found very strange. The member of staff said it has `always` been so.

The reasons for the platform alterations have been explained Not quite - there's another! LOROL stable one train at Richmond during the day (off peak). The obvious place for this is Platform 3 as there's no negative rail for District line trains, but this spare train is available and can be changed over with another and so you end up with that train stabled in another platform which then throws all the platform workings out.
