Oh dear, that certainly isn't a looker. The headlights seem to have been inspired by 89001 'Avocet'. One of the things I have noticed is that the bogies are the conventional bombardier outboard bogies, and not the new inboard bogies that they keep on trying to sell. The apparent lack of a gangway is disappointing, but expected

Agree with domh, it reminds me of the Class 89 front end. its not particularly ugly. That prize goes to the 376s

Oddly enough, having seen it a few more times, I have become less averse to it. I suppose it is similar to the new mind the gap announcement on the S stock, A bit of a shock at first, but you soon grow used to it. And dazz285, I too hope it is modified, the coupler doesn't have an electrical block, so won't get far with the multiple working on the WAML |

Looks like a class 378 crossbred with a Voyager. That front end looks really weird for slow, urban services as does the side window / driver's door arrangement. I suspect that "impression" will not quite make it fully into production.

It looks like it's screaming in pain.  It isn't the best looking, but hey ho, I don't think there's anything worse than the current Class 315/317s. |

From some very rough guestimations, the 172 has approx 128 seats per train. The 378 by comparison has approximately 112, and assuming that the aventra cars will be similar to the 378 cars, there will be a slight reduction in seats, but I'm sure the majority of passengers who will be standing will appreciate the layout.
As for subclasses then, it would seem that there will be 2 obvious ones:
1) Based at Ilford, 25kV AC only, Mixed seating
2) Based at Willesden, Dual Voltage, Longitudinal seating

Simon I rather feel people will be delighted to be able to actually board a train in the rush hour rather than being left on the platform. I do think rail enthusiasts do not see things as commuters do. They simply want to be able to get on a train that arrives on time - especially if journeys are relatively short as they are mostly are on the GOBLIN. A seat is a nice to have in the London rush hour - not a popular thing to say but it is the reality for almost everyone who boards trains away from terminal stations. |
