Saw this lurking outside Neasden last week.
I noticed that the cars seemed to be a bit further apart than usual and have a more substantial coupling between them than the usual bar. Is that the case? and if so, what is the coupling between the units? are they actually further apart, and if so, why? ability to negotiate tighter curves?

The track recording coach (1973 Stock) has buckeye couplings at either end. This picture from 1987 ( www.15c.co.uk/LU_archive/0012.htm) when the coach was on test from Derby RTC shows it directly coupled to two BR coaches (a Mk1 and a Mk2). The non driving ends of the 1960 Stock DM's also have buckeyes. I am not sure of the reasons why, but they were probably fitted to allow the car to be used / hauled on BR, and as this coach is only used with the 1960 Stock DM's, perhaps there has never been a reason to remove them maybe?

It was to allow use on main-line duties if required.

It's all obsolete now, but the original plan was that the '73ts Track Recording Car could couple to any SR type train with buckeye coupler and 27 way jumper - eg between a class 73 loco and a 4TC set. At the time there were (IIRC) only two TRCs in the country and the BR one wasn't compatible with SR vehicles. It was also intended to use the two cars to cross-calibrate each other. I'm not certain how much all of this ever came to fruition, but, I think, not much, but probably enough to make it worthwhile.

I personally hope the cars equipment will be retained for the cravens heritage set. LT113s motors are rare now!

comes to mind that there might have been structural problems if the TRC had been marshalled between a cl:73 and a 4TC for instance as the couplings are above frame height and would exert an uneven pull/push on the underframe.
