I thought I caught sight of a LO class 378 poking its nose out of the country end doors. Surely this was an apparition?

Illford depot has a wheel lathe - not many other depots in London do. As such units (and occasionally locomotives) are sent there from other places to have this work done at Illford under contract and the sight of a 378 is not that unusual in the context of things that have had attention there in the past.

Yet LOROL's New Cross Gate depot is equipped with a lathe. I wonder whether it was a newly-reliveried 315 which was seen.

Patston -- no, it definitely wasn't a 315 or 317; I definitely noted the blue fairing on the underside of the front end round the drawgear

The wheel lathe at New Cross Gate was removed. The Wheel Lathe building and Heavy Clean were repurposed for in to a new facility to attach the 5th coach to 378s. Wheel Lathing is now done elsewhere.

There was a 378 at Ilford yesterday evening. Whole train visible in beside the slow lines.

Possibly the same set, Crusty, if it was having some fairly major work. Glad I wasn't imagining it.

Yes NXG does have a Wheel Lathe, it is still in place and is fully functional although it is not in use as the wheel lathe and the heavy clean building next door are being used by the 5th car insertion team.
Currently the 378 fleet goes to either Hornsey, Selhurst or Ilford to have their tyres turned. This will most likely continue for the foreseeable future as their is no definite end date in sight for the 5th car insertions. I'm sure the drivers don't mind as it means they get to see another little bit of London on their travels

Do regular Overground drivers take the trains to Ilford or do they require another NR driver in attendance? Also, what are the moves required for the 378s and 172s to get to Ilford?

Looking at Carto Metro, the simplest route to Ilford Depot from New Cross Gate for the 378s looks to be the South London Line to Clapham Junction, West London Line to Willesden Junction, North London Line to the junctions between Hackney Wick and Stratford (North Channelsea Junction I think is the key one), then through platforms 10 or 10a at Stratford, through Maryland platform 4 and then to Ilford Depot via either the fast or slow lines.
The 172s and 378s that are maintained at Willesden can join the North London Line directly and then proceed as above. 172s could also run on the Goblin to Woodgrange Park, reverse and take Woodgrange Park junction to Forest Gate junction, reverse at the first opportunity and then to Ilford via the fast or (more likely) slow lines.

There was a 378 at Ilford yesterday evening. Whole train visible in beside the slow lines. Another LM-liveried 321 in Ilford adjacent to the main line yesterday. In for service, or another transfer to LOROL for the Emerson Park branch?

My understanding is that there are now only two or three depots in the entire country equipped with a wheel lathe, one being Ilford. Not sure where the others are though.
This is one of the reasons why it recently took Greater Anglia so long to bring its DMU fleet back up to strength following "leaf-gate".
It's also worth noting that Ilford is now only accessible from the slow lines. Direct connections to/from the up and down fast lines were removed a number of years ago.

Possibly neither, GA are running one unit out on the Liv St mainline, I know it has been to Braintree, Southend, Clacton and Colchester so far!

Its not good that there are so few of what surely is an important device for train operations. (Wheel lathes). I suppose penny pinching cost cutting is the cause.
