Hi all, regular Piccadilly line user here with a first post.
Just wondered if anyone could help with my biggest bĂȘte noire about the Picc, other than the rush hour overcrowding.
At Turnpike Lane, where I get on (and I think also at Wood Green and Manor House), the train destination boards on the southbound platform only display a train when it is one minute away from the platform, which is absolutely no help at all when the service is disrupted because you don't know if you are going to have to wait two minutes or over fifteen.
Train destination boards elsewhere on the line show trains up to fifteen minutes away. The northbound ones at TL seem to work normally. So why are the southbound ones at TL so useless?!?
Apologies if there has been a previous thread on this, but I did look and couldn't find anything.

Welcome to DD.
I suspect the reason may be (unless soemone knows differently) that until a train leaves Wood Green for the Westbound the system west of Wood Green does not 'know' what its description is. This is because there is a reversing siding at Wood Green and trains can be interposed there 'between' trains en route from Arnos Grove. Manor House would be similarly affected. This was certainly true at several stations immediately beyond a transmitting point but with the signalling and thus the TDs being modernised the situation may well now be different.

By contrast, a modern system such as Victoria N/B can cope with this, of a fashion anyway - trains starting there from the sidings are shown on the boards, but as "Out of Service" - which is useful if you know you can let a rammed train go and have an empty one arrive scant seconds later.
Back to the Picc - the indicator at South Kensington W/B displays the times perfectly, but the destinations are picked randomly from a hat by a wizard at full moon, or something like that anyway. Stations either side are fine and there are regularly tannoys about how unreliable the indicator is and that you should ignore it. Perhaps it'll be upgraded when the refurbishment happens.
