From an article in the latest FLTM newsletter, it seems that the 38 stock needs major repairs to its bogies (amongst other things), with every bogie significantly fractured. This means that it will be in Acton Works until early 2016, with the bill expected to be somewhere over £75k.
LU are providing the finance to pay for this, which will presumably be paid back by ticket sales from future special train runs.
During the major repairs new signalling equipment will be fitted so that it can run on all of the lines that have gradually become closed to it over the last few years. Exact details aren't provided, but there is bound to be someone at Acton Depot next Saturday who knows.

Well this is very good and welcomed news for the 1938 stock, however the maybe not so good fo the chances of one of the remaining A Stock units be preserved due to budgetary considerations!

I will believe it when I see it for the 38 stock getting fitted and operational with Seltrac. Although it's fitted to engineers trains, the prospect for successful sustained PM driving, during traffic hours, on a non-WSP-fitted EP/Westinghouse brake train is not good. On the Northern Line there are still loads of places where the target speed drops with no warning. Sometimes it does this because of catching up with the train in front and gives insufficient warning, other times it's due to issues with the system. Do this in the open and in the wet and the 38 stock will have 4 cars of flatted wheels, as well as the train going non-communicating and delaying the railway.

The same LT Museum publication reports that the overhaul will mean that the 4-car 38ts will have another 10-15 before the next lift/overhaul is needed. I wonder how long before significant bespoke parts will need to be built/constructed to keep the unit in service (e.g. bogies, given the current fractures, which are being repaired on this occasion).

Presumably spares can currently be sourced from the same suppliers Island Line use? If so, then there should be availability at least while that fleet remains in service and when they are retired the museum would be seriously foolhardy not to cannibalise them where possible. If the intention remains to use the 1973 stocks as the next trains on the IoW, and the Piccadilly replacements will not arrive until after the SSR signalling is complete, then the contractual woes faced by that upgrade is good news for the 1938 stock. Possibly.

The 38ts overhaul has been going a while now. Reading the article myself, I believe it means new signalling equipment will be fitted at some point, but this will not be done during this current overhaul stage. Its in acton for the heavy work to be done.
