Don't worry, I'm not about to try this at home or at the depot-I'm simply curious!!!
For the purposes of my question, I assume the following things have happened:
I.Services have stopped for the day.
II.All safety devices onboard have been disabled as much as possible.
III.All safety devices trackside have been disabled as much as possible.
IV.The train moves forward at a reasonable speed, but not so fast as to negate a swift stop being achieved.
V.No units are coming the other way.
So, could a D Stock make it all the way to Heathrow T5, enter the run around loop and get out again under its own ability to do so?
Thanks!

Assuming you mean the Piccadilly Line tracks, from what I've seen from the cab videos, no they couldn't as they're be too big. The Piccadilly tunnels under the airport are tube gauge which is why they've got those mercury tubes at Hounslow to stop any runaway Ds. I suppose they might be able to fit down the NR tunnels once they've all been altered by Vivarail but that's a different thing entirely as by then they won't be D Stock anymore.

It would have been sensible to build the Heathrow extension to surface stock gauge.
It has all types construction - surface, cut & cover, a bridge and tunnel.
Big trains with luggage racks would have been appreciated.

I believe that not long after it was opened, similar views were expressed at the top of LU. I've recounted in these pages before; that while giving a presentation to LURS the former Chief Operating Manager J Graeme-Bruce; very much regretted not authorising the Hatton Cross/Heathrow extension to allow sub-surface trains, when he signed the documents.

The then Director of Marketing was told the luggage space mentioned in the documents meant racks not vacant floor space.

I believe there have been bridge modifications on the line so surface stock could not get as far as Hounslow?

Perhaps a D78 Cabriolet might stand a chance of getting to the airport. It's an easy conversion.......see metman's post above.

Presumably if the D stock can get to Hounslow, the reason the S stock haven't been cleared there is that nobody has come up with a justifiable reason to spend the time and money to get the paperwork and testing done?
