While browsing around YouTube, I came across a Fred Ivey video of Southall after the 1997 crash. At the end of his video was something you don't see on the mainline very often! Link to YouTube

I would guess it is being taken away for refurbishment.

Yup. That's right about the time they were being sent off for refurbishment, so I guess that's where it's going. It's good to see it being moved on rails instead of on the back of a low-loader!

HI yes all the 1973 went by rail for refurbishment to bombardier pro rail at Wakefield I was there at Southall shed about a hour after the train crash and due to flying Scotsman was then in the wheel drop shed at Southall I was at the time support crew for flying Scotsman. FISH7373

Does that mean that the 1973ts would have been routed via Ealing Common and Ealing Broadway in order to access the Great Western Mainline
or is there another way for the 73ts to access the GWML

via the connection behind Ruislip depot, then down the New North Line to Greenford.

Yes, it used to be Ruislip depot, connect to NNML at West Ruislip, Greenford West Junction, Drayton Green Junction to Hanwell, then Southall where that video extract was certainly filmed. It is seen approaching Southall station from Hanwell
