I dont know if anyone else has noticed, but I have noticed this twice now.
I think this may be on only one specific train, correct me if im wrong, but before every single PA Station & Driver Announcement, there is a chime. Much like one you would hear on an aeroplane.
It's a lovely addition, it sounds great! But I dont know if this is deliberate or an accident.
Anyone else noticed this?

I don't normally use the Piccadilly Line but I would guess that it is deliberate. People don't hear the first word or two of any announcement - try answering your phone with just your name and you will notice that most people will still ask to speak to you. Starting with a chime or spoken lead in gets the attention ready for the critical part.

I thought it was deliberate, I wonder why it is only on one train then?

I did find this on one unit once, but that was a while back and didn't take note of the number. Not a regular user of the Piccadilly Line though. I've been on this unit only a couple of times, despite commuting on the Piccadilly line everyday, so it just goes to show how rare occasion it is! I did, however, manage to obtain a recording of it (if anyone would like it, please send a PM). I'm pretty certain this topic was discussed yonks ago on this or another forum, with the conclusion being that the one unit with chimes was just a trial or something. To be honest, it was a bit of a disappointment when I heard them in situ for the first time - the chimes are rather quiet compared to what I had imagined!

I think the chimes are just right, I could hear them clearly though my Beats Studios V2, which have Active Noise Cancellation. So I knew when to listen for announcements Id love to see it as a permanent addition to all lines and trains.

To be honest the Piccadilly line DVA can be quite variable in terms of volume; sometimes certain cars have a lower volume or indeed no sound at all. So I might have just been unlucky and not heard the chime to the best of its ability!

On '73 Picc stock the PA 'bing' before an announcement is an option the driver can choose to select on the Cab Audio Display Panel. Once selected it will precede all announcements with the 'bing'. I personally find the 'bing' really irritating when travelling and only ever use it before the last terminating stop to try get passengers attention. None of the '73 stock have this feature permanently switched on. The default is for it to be off, thus it's always driver activated.
Hope this helps.

Personally I think it makes a nice change

Ah sorry - I think that 'one unit' trial information must have been just a rumour or ill-informed advice! Thanks for confirming the real answer smudger

The driver can access the DVA menu on the toblerone and turn announcement chimes on or off

I would upload a picture of this but not sure how to 1) Go to a website e.g. imgur.com/2) Click on the right hand side the Upload from Computer option and find the jpg file on your computer. 3) Click "Upload" in the popup box that comes up after this, showing your image at the bottom of the box. 4) Copy and paste the contents of the "Linked BBCode" box on the right hand side into a new post. 5) Enjoy

What's a Toblerone? Apart from chocolate. Toblerone is slang for the PA control box on 73ts. Named as such for its triangular nature

As domh245 said, also when get a passenger emergency alarm is activated it shows which car and what alarm has been activated and also allows the driver to talk back to the person who activated the alarm

It will tell you which 'vestibule' (it actually says that word on the screen!) has been operated on that car.

I remember that passenger emergency alarm / communicating with driver feature being demonstrated in an episode of My Family when they were stuck on the Piccadilly line on Christmas Eve! You just pull down the red latch to speak.

Rummer, thanks for providing that picture of the configuration. Does anyone know what 'Local Information' does?

Does it trigger the extra information on the zone 1 stations announcements? E.g. "Alight for the RNIB" or "Alight for Buckingham Palace"? Or are these via a timeclock?

Ah you could be right there. Mind you, I was once in a 73ts cab where I asked to be shown the DVA set-up; I vaguely recall the more explicit labeling of 'tourist' and 'commuter'.

Does it trigger the extra information on the zone 1 stations announcements? E.g. "Alight for the RNIB" or "Alight for Buckingham Palace"? Or are these via a timeclock? This is done through a route code with the instructions being given as Destination-Route Code-Start Station. Route code is also used for stopping a Turnham Green or not and if going round the T4 Loop or not. As shown in the menu pictured above, depending what route Code is used you could still turn off the Tourist Announcements, or even just the interchange bit. But this only seems to work in stations, the next announcement between stations normally bugs and the system kind of resets back to default with all options on (except the chime).
