The recent escalator work at highbury and Islington has really highlighted the shortcomings of the arrangements to access the Victoria line and northern city line platforms. Passengers are warned that it can take up to 15 minutes to enter/exit the station in the peak - I think this completely unacceptable as I could halfway to Brixton in that time!!
Given the increased importance if this station as a key overground/underground interchange for NE London and its use as a transport node for the emirates something needs to be done. The romantic idea, fuelled by relatively recent remedial paintwork would be to reuse the great northern station building across the road as an additional exit point with high capacity lifts. The buildings either side are not particularly noteworthy so the constrained site could be expanded to make this idea feasible with step free being a possibility too.
Not sure of alignment of the Victoria line GNC but assume they point toward Finsbury park, so passenger tunnels from that end of the platforms to an exit further up holloway road would be another idea that would certainly suit a lot of people, including arsenal fans heading in that direction or communters coming southbound aling the holloway and would relieve pressure on the main ticket hall.
Also what is happening with the long mooted move of the post office to create a proper and dignified forecourt and a better integrated bus interchange. I have heard zilch on that for many years and again the situation seems to become more pressing as numbers on the overground continue to increase at this station, with five car trains on the way!
Grateful for discussion
