Apparently the Barclaycard side of the mixed-mode card will monitor the transactions that occur via the 'wave if it's under £10' feature. If several occur in a row, or other 'suspicious' activity is detected then it will demand a PIN be entered to validate that it is still being used by its owner. If the PIN is entered incorrectly three times then the whole Barclaycard side will be locked (as per Chip & PIN). Of course, this will inevitably affect people using their own cards from time-to-time, but if they are aware that it can happen, and that it's for security then this will lessen the annoyance factor. And if you do lose your card it will be blacklisted as soon as the loss/theft is reported.

Chigwell is now a Z4 station... Chesham being in D... You'd be charged £4 to enter, and having the system presume you not to have touched out within the 2 hour time limit, would charge you another £4... the Z123456ABCD travelcard is just under £8. I doubt this - has anyone actually tried it? My hunch would be that Oyster actually allows you somewhere between 2.5 and 3 hours, with the publicly communicated limit of 2 as a safety factor to ensure that nobody following TfL's advice gets caught out...

From what I've heard/ read the TOC's and the Oyster offer is a little deeper than you'd imagine.
The TOC's are concerned that by buying into Oyster, the obvious system for NR's eventual smart card system would be Oyster. This would give the company behind Oyster a virtual monopoly.
Oyster isn't ISO compliant.
The mayor could remove the unfairness for NR passengers by reducing the prices for extension tickets. SIMPLE

City Thameslink currently has an oyster reader on either side of the concourse, and until recently nothing more. There are now some eerily gate shaped plywood boxes arranged in the manner of a gateline which will probably be removed to reveal gates... I was at the Ludgate Hill entrance earlier today, and the gateline has now been revealed. They are the new-style gates with the sloping Oyster reader, together with one of the wide gates. None are operational as yet.

Oyster is not ITSO compatible, but South West Trains have opted for a system which is Oyster compatible, and meets ITSO requirements... I presume 'One', Silverlink and 'c2c' have opted for a system which is ITSO/oyster compatible too??? I doubt this - has anyone actually tried it? My hunch would be that Oyster actually allows you somewhere between 2.5 and 3 hours, with the publicly communicated limit of 2 as a safety factor to ensure that nobody following TfL's advice gets caught out... tinyurl.com/yfwam4I travelled with a friend once, who uses Oyster PP, and we deliberately times it so that he touched out more than 2 hours after touching in... We then checked it on an MFM and it deducted the £4 entry charge, plus the £4 exit charge, as well as his capped travel up to then... he wasn't very happy! The time between touching in and touching out was 2 hours, 17 mins... I think it's about time that a One Day Travelcard could be loaded onto the card and as soon as you touch in, it immediately deducts the fare for the zones you have chosen, if you travel outside of those, prepay comes in... it would also be handy if the 3-Day Travelcard was upgraded to an Oystercard too... The oyster website just says "At present One day and Three Day Travelcards are not available on Oyster".

Yeah, it was announced in the Substandard that Dagenham East and Romford will have Oyster Readers by June. Quite why these two stations were selected is beyond me...

Should have... unless they've been chavved by the... err... chavs... I think att the LTSR stations should have the mainline platforms put back... if there is an incident at Plaistow on the District tracks, c2c can then stop and shift the pax!

with regard to gates, I meant to say gates/readers, but anything left in the open to the elements is just asking to malfunction/be vandalised... Aye - on NR routes, say down my way (Ilford --> Shenfield), they're gonna be vandilised like that! *clicks fingers* Romford on a Friday night anybody?

Dagenham Dock....brings back memories of when I explored that part of the world around five years ago, between Fenchurch and Grays. The section through Purfleet is the most picturesque bit of line I've ever been on

Ockendon and Chafford Hundred are set to get readers by Summer 2008... they are outside the Zones 1-6, so what will they do, extend the A-D zones all the way around?

If they keep going on that basis, they might as well do the whole country. I'll probably be in something like zone BX

but I don't see why not... if national rail were to allow Oyster and spend hundreds of million on an Oyster system for the whole country (they are going to do it anyway with a different type of ticket) and then we would have an intergrated system.
then convince private operators of buses and you're there...
I can wish I suppose. And who wants to have enough money for a GNER turn-up ticket.

Can you imagine Island Line installing Oyster readers? Maybe for an island only system... I cant see many doing a One Day TravelCard from Shanklin! must cost a bit if its available tho!! Still, now that c2c have committed, perhaps it might encourage others to do likewise... I'm all for integration... shame it wasn't like this years ago!

I have heard a rumour that with the Oyster going to NR, that staff travel facilities may change. I heard one proposal would be for NR employees to get free LU travel, and for us to get free NR in Zones 1 - 6. Has anyone else come across this, and how likely do you think it will be to happen?

I've heard that too, from a few sources... The feeling for this is rather in agreement, some existing NR staff still gat Priv rate on LU, a friend does, and I've just got him a Priv rate PAYG oyster! He's happy at saving a fiver each time he visits London!

The other thing I heard was that nearly all the NR companies were in agreement for LU employees, employed after 1996 to get priv rate entitlement - except Virgin Trains. Is this true? If so, cheers Mr Branson

ScotRail, as it then was, refused to have anything to do with it too! It's now part of the Fusst Group... I wonder if they have changed their stance on it? I wouldnae mind paying £25 to go on the Caledonian Sleeper!

Well, the ALL line Rail Rover is £385 for seven days, £525 for 14 days, if the full priv rate was applied [quarter-fare] that'd be around £95 and £130 respectively...
Bargain? Not Half!!!

Crikey! That's mental! I'd end up doing most of Britain, for example, starting at London, travel to Yorkshire, Guest House there, then up to the borders of Scotland, another Guest House, and on and on............great plan, but too pricey for me at the min!

One third off, yes... it applies to the ALL Line Rover - I havent checked about other rovers, but would hazard a guess that they would be accepted, since ALL TOC's accept the YP Railcard under ATOC Agreement.

ATO, I was inspired, as I pop over to the Island Line via the Southsea-Ryde "Bovvercraft" on occasions, to look up the Shanklin-Waterloo fares. Off-peak Travelcard, which must include the Catamaran as well as the Island Line to Ryde is apparently £42.50 with CDR @ £39.20 and Peak T/C is £68.00 with Standard Dar Return @ £60.80. Of course the Ryde Esplanade - St Johns Annual Season is the cheapest in the south east, together with Newhaven Harbour - Town, and is a Gold Card for those lovely Gold Card benefits.
