Ladies & Gents,
We are launching a new website to replace Dave's original Trainweb one later this month. At the same time we will be giving the forum a full refurbishment, and as part of that, we will require a total of Ten Moderators.
In order to reach the required number, Art and DavidH have agreed to step back up to the Moderator role and they have been joined by Dstock7080 and MetControl.
We will be posting more details about the new website and forum refurbishment nearer the time, but for now we'd like you to join us in welcoming Art, DavidH, Dstock7080 and MetControl onto the forum staff.
ChrisW, Colin, Phil & Tubeprune.

Welcome guys! I know you don't need any more bodies but I can help out in the future if needed. I am a 12-year veteran of a US-based Forum and a Mod of a Canadian one.

Why not wait until the Proboards V5 Upgrade at the end of the year?

Date not confirmed but estimated to be released at the end of the year. I am involved in the Closed BETA and it is pretty much finished.

Why not wait until the Proboards V5 Upgrade at the end of the year? You are not the only one with access to the beta test - anyone with a support account can sign up too! Anyway, as you'll soon see, our refurbishment is not reliant on bits and bobs of Facebook & Twitter - sorry, v5 of the proboards software. Enough politics - welcome aboard boys.....

I would personally not use proboards at all and host a forum software like mybb or something on your own servers - would be more reliable and more customiseable.

I would personally not use proboards at all and host a forum software like mybb or something on your own servers - would be more reliable and more customiseable. There's an old Irish joke: visitor to rural village asks local "How do I get to Enniskillen". Answer from local "If I were you, I wouldn't start from here". So it is with us. We are where we are. If starting afresh, Proboards would likely not be at the top of the list. We even considered a move once before. But to move all the existing stuff and/or provide seamless reference to it is just downright impossible. Proboards may not be the best but it's what we are stuck with have got.

Of course, it would be difficult to move forum software, but not impossible while still keeping all the members and posts. You can download the database ans repload it to the new software. Technically not like starting fresh - merely an upgrade! I set up this forum in a couple of hours one night last month. Okay, so my forum has no members (maybe because there is no longer much of a demand for the topic). It's hosted on my own webspace and doesn't have a .proboards.com URL. It's more professional having a proper URL (even if .co.cc is a free domain it's still proper). Not trying to argue here, just merely hinting

Proboards databases cannot be copied. As for anything else, we are more than likely one step ahead of you already Can I politely suggest you wait & see what our refurb entails first......

Is it a 'refurb' or a 'refresh'?

At the same time we will be giving the forum a full refurbishment, and as part of that, we will require a total of Ten Moderators. Welcome to the new mods and thanks to the existing ones for doing a great job and sometimes having to tread a fine line. I do hope that none of the content of Dave's original site will be lost, particularly the personal reminiscenses/comments about the job from Dave and some other colleagues. These give such a fascinating insight into the daily workings of the District, and the character of those employed working on it.

[off-topic] Proboards appear, for a small fee, to let you point your domain at your forums on here. Additionally, .co.cc and 'proper URL' are not quite words I'd put together. There's a reason it's free, and also a reason why it shouldn't be used for serious domains, but that's wandering even more off topic. I'm more than willing to explain in PM. [/off-topic] I'm sure the rest of us will just need to wait to find out :-)

We are well aware of domain options!! We have spent almost a year and a half on this so you can be assured that we have covered every conceivable area Isn't a refurb also known as a refresh? Quite frankly either word will do but refurb perhaps implies a bigger change so we'll go with that word.... ...... ..... The most we can reveal at this stage is that the refurb is planned to take place during the early part of Sunday morning. It is expected to take Two hours to complete and for the first time in Six years, the forum will be placed into 'Maintenance Mode' and will thus be unavailable for those Two hours. All will be revealed in just under 4 days....

Isn't a refurb also known as a refresh? Based on TfL's terminology for the programme underway on the Central Line currently, a "refurb" may or may not be a "refresh", but a "refresh" is significantly less than a "refurb".

I would have said that a refresh is when passengers know it's an old train and a refurb is when they think it's a new train!
Oh and welcome to the new Mods!

Call it what you will, I like "progression" Anyhow, I'm sure everyone will warm to the progression, it's the hard work of a lot of people undertaken over a lot of time, and having been in the privileged position to watch things happen in the background, I know how much dedication and personal time has gone into the project. As Colin has said, all will be revealed when you log in on Sunday morning, but to give you a clue, I'm currently using part of the progression....

when you log in on Sunday morning Logging in on Sunday morning interferes with fishing. However, if the weather is inclement, and leaving either the phone or the laptop accidentally logged on without being present aside, I may well look in. I assume the new forum version will be air-conditioned, walkthrough, feature a controversial seating arrangement, nowhere to hang your umbrella and be unable to operate in the Chalfont bay platform. Anything less would be rather dull..........

You have to remember that the forum is historically District (can't say too much now or I'll get the sack before I've done anything ;D ) and as such by the time they get anything, all the glitches have been ironed out, and the mileage clocked up by the real railways.
So, what you should be able to expect is a little more than the bog-standard train, and it is unlikely to fail at the first station ;D ;D
