Chat Area, Use It Or Lose ItFor those not aware, we have a chat area, and it's for the use of people online to communicate with each other without the need of PM's, or just generally keep up to date with each other. Well, it was very busy at one time, but had descended to a single post some days, so we're asking people to either use it, or it'll be gone in the next wave of changes which are coming to a computer near you some time before Christmas. If you wish to be part of it, contact any of the team, and we'll grant you access, although certain rules, see rule 11 apply. If you don't, again contact a member of the team, and we'll take you off the list. So there it is folks, in a nutshell, use it or lose it.

If I may be so bold, the final sentence of Rule 11b seems a little vague to me.

There are additional rules for that area, which you would see if you had access. If you don't have access, you wouldn't need to know those specific rules.

To add to the above, this is a basic "Do you want it or not" type thread.
The rules within are amazingly easy to follow, and on good days, it'll keep you amused/occupied for ages. Latterly it's been like a morgue!
Over to you the members.

I originally took the term Chat Area to mean off-topic area (talking about things totally unconnected with LUL/LOROL/TfL), but apparently not if it's restricted access

I originally took the term Chat Area to mean off-topic area (talking about things totally unconnected with LUL/LOROL/TfL), but apparently not if it's restricted access According to the rules: There is a chat board on this forum which is intended for use by those that like to chat about about all manner of subjects. so it seems it's for virtually anything. I've been looking for a complete non-tube-related part here (exept for the Rant board and the DLR etc). Are there any certain things to do to get accepted, or is just giving a member of staff a little wink enough?

AIUI (and this is not official in any way, shape or form) the basic criteria for getting access are: 1. Be around a while 2. In that time show you're not an idiot, that you can play by the forum rules and that your attitude is generally not incompatible with the forum culture 3. Not pi$$ off the admins/moderators (too much) 4. Ask for access

Whilst I am in favour of having a chat area (indeed have been invited to join by a mod), I have chosen not to join. As it is I can't exit the forum until I've read all the threads, and having chat threads to read too means that I'd never go out of the flat!
I like the current situation, but perhaps some forum members don't know that the chat area exists?

ChrisM has it about right: AIUI (and this is not official in any way, shape or form) the basic criteria for getting access are: 1. Be around a while 2. In that time show you're not an idiot, that you can play by the forum rules and that your attitude is generally not incompatible with the forum culture 3. Not pi$$ off the admins/moderators (too much) 4. Ask for access Now perhaps a quick description/history lesson of the area would help: It's an extra board which is hidden unless you have access. There is a new thread created each day and members that are online can use that thread to talk to each other about absolutely anything under the sun, usual rules permitting (ie, keep it clean, no strong political views, etc). The board was created because a lot of the railway specific threads were being overtaken by general chatter and this generated complaints towards the forum staff - the chat board proved to be the answer. It was made special access only so that the last xx posts didn't throw up loads of chatter posts which were irrelevant to the majority of the membership. Of course if you have access, the last xx posts option will show you those posts too. We've probably had a good 250-300 members join us since the chat area was last promoted, which is why SE13 has taken up the challenge of promoting the area.

I mainly want to chat about buses - mostly but not exclusively pertaining to London's buses. I looked for a bus category when I first came on here and was slightly disappointed not to find one. I've found the NR forum, but never found one for London's buses and buses in general.

I've found the NR forum, but never found one for London's buses and buses in general. You can talk buses all you like in the chat area! There are a few bus drivers here, myself included (when I'm allowed back to work from the current on-going medical condition) and some bus enthusiasts too. As for a section for buses, believe me, it ain't going to happen! I've asked the question myself on a couple of occasions, but as the bosses rightfully point out, this is a LU site first and foremost, with a few links to things that have an impact on LU. Ask away, you may be given access, and you can chat as much as you like about them

try putting tangytango into a famous web search engine. Thank you mrfs42. I'm a member of that forum. I'd like to point out that security in TBF has been tweaked recently so it may take a little while for any new accounts to be approved, but I'm sure that it wouldn't be too long. I never knew that there's a chat area here or in any of the Proboard forums I've joined so far. EDIT: I intially thought that it was a chat room kind of thing but it's just a seperate section of the forum.

One of the reggae music forums I participate in is a Proboards forum with an off-topic (chat) area only accessible to properly logged in members. Dave's chat area is the first "by application only" chat area I've encountered

I gave up with waiting to hear about an application to join TBF a while ago...!
For those who might like to chat about buses, there is also the Tr*******t Forum, which seems to have, like yours truly, a number of DDF members. I think RUKF also has discussions about buses.
I regret to say that I have hardly posted in Chat here since I was given the privilege. Ought to do so more.

There has been some controversy with a few members there a while back and extra caution was taken with approving new accounts. The Tr*******t Forum has been very, very quiet recently, it used to be very busy a couple of years ago.

Please do! You have my e mail address.
It was the late Routemaster Forum that demonstrated all too well how things can get out of hand. So many posters forgot the cardinal rule of online forums that you should never be disrespectful ... most particularly personally, as any remarks will be read by or made known to those who were the subject of comments. Regrettably this still happens on other transport-orientated forums, with comments usually aimed at a certain famous publishing house that I have more than a little connection with.

There are also email discussion groups for London Transport (which seems to primarily discuss buses and is nowhere near as clued up regarding LU topics as this forum is) and at least one for London Buses specifically (I'm not a member of any of these so can't comment on their content). These are all yahoo groups, go if you search for appropriate names at yahoogroups.com you'll find several.

I've been "pending" there for over a year now, so it's safe to say that the process is a touch drawn out....... As for the chat area, it's not essential to post all the time in there, but we do need a bit more from everyone to keep it viable. Yesterday saw a huge upturn in fortunes. Meantime again, those who have PM'd me will (or may already) see the area sometime reasonably soon.

Sorry to 'Bump' but would it be possible just to have a 'General Surface Transport' board, for the discussion. I understand this isn't directly LUL related but surely if it was discussing London Buses, topics discussed might 'criss cross' with topics on the LUL Board? Fare Evasion, Grafitti ect.

We have considered this in the past, but we are a specialist forum concentrating on London Underground.
We subsequently introduced other TfL (Transport for London) railway based modes owing to their very close association with London Underground, and to a lessor degree we cover National Rail in London where it has a close association with TfL.
If we were to do buses, then people would say "what about taxis?". Then they'd want to include Trams - a mode not considered as rail on the basis that Trams run on sight alone, obey road traffic laws, etc. Soon we'd be moving into aviation.
So unfortunately we don't do buses and we have no plans to do so in the future. Rail replacement buses would however be the sole exception, naturally.

Add to that, I have also suggested a sister forum to this containing buses in the past, but it's still a big NO

*BUMP*
The chat area is being hugely under used again, almost to the point where it's a wonder it's still there, some days barely scraping half a dozen posts.
If you wish to participate, and you don't have "chatter" under your username, drop me a PM, and I'll get access sorted out for you.
