The first Metro in the Arab World has been opened in the United Arab Emirates. What made me smile is that there is first class accommodation, complete with leather seats......never happen in London. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8245408.stm

I might be utterly wrong on this, but I thought the Central London was originally planned to have first class seats; not to mention 'Mayflower' and 'Galatea' - which did run.

Similarly, Indian domestic airlines still have big leather seats for business class pax in their short-haul B737s and A319s. Some societies are fonder of class distinctions than others...

Both the Met and MDR had three classes originally (1st, 2nd & 3rd) - I believe this lasted until electrification, when 2nd class was withdrawn. First class lasted on the sub-surface lines until WW2 sometime. But how much difference there was between the classes on electric stock I don't know.
And there were two classes on the Paris Metro until pretty recently (1980s or 1990s)

The Paris Metro first class was withdrawn in the summer of 1991, I can still remember it being there on my first trip in the late '80s.

The Met mainline was the last LU service to have First Class. The T and Dreadnought stocks were the most obvious. 9 compartments for third class and only 7 comps for first class, all on the same length of coach. The First class seats also had arm rests for 4 people and the third class had no arm rests and could fit 5!
When the first class was withdrawn in 1941, the arm rests were removed, although punters still went for the 7 compartment coaches as there was more leg room!
